Happy birthday to Wayne Gretzky!
For Hancock International College students unfamiliar with who the man is, he is a former professional ice hockey player and former head coach and played from 1979 to 1999.
His nickname is “The Great One” and many sportswriters, players, and the NHL have called him the greatest hockey player ever. He holds the record for more goals and assists than any other player.
He is credited with popularizing hockey in California, after his trade to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988. The team was eventually led to the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals, the first appearance in the Finals for the Kings.
Following his retirement in 1999, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and his jersey number 99 was retired through the whole NHL league. Afterwards, he became part owner of the Phoenix Coyotes and after 5 years he became the team’s head coach. He was the executive director for the Canadian national men’s hockey team during the 2002 Winter Olympics. Since 2009, Gretzky has resigned as the coach and given up his ownership share.
